HIP DYSPLASIA SCHEME

Screening for Hip Dysplasia is done by the KC/BVA scheme whereby a dogs hips are  X rayed and the plates are evaluated by a team of appointed specialists to determine  anatomical and pathological changes indicative of hip dysplasia.   The scores shown are  one for each hip and then the combined total.

The range is from 0 to 53 on each hip ( 0 being the best score and 53 being the worst) and then the two hips are totalled together

                   OPTIGEN

The Optigen PRCD PRA Test has now been upgraded from a gene marker test to a
Full Gene Test and the reporting of results is now
Optigen - Normal  (was Pattern A)
Optigen - Carrier   (was Pattern B)
Optigen Affected   (was Pattern C)

The Optigen prcd test is a DNA-based test that provides, for the first time, a method  to eliminate PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) from the Portuguese Water Dog.  The  Optigen prcd test is a marker test rather  than a mutation-based gene test.  This means  that it identifies dogs by a “fingerprint” on chromosome 9 near the prcd gene locus.   The result of the test is a genotype or pattern that allows the separation of PWD into three  groups pattern A, B and C.  Pattern A is normal and will never develop prcd.  Pattern B is Non  affected but is probably a carrier of prcd and Pattern C is probably affected.  All dogs can be  bred safely as long as one of the parents is Pattern A.
